The massive fortress of Coburg, Germany, towers over this lively town with its wealth of tradition. For many years this was a popular meeting place for the European aristocracy. Coburg Castle, known as the Crown of Franconia because of its hilltop position, was founded in the 11th century and largely rebuilt in the Renaissance. This impressive structure, with its double ring of defences, was never taken by force. Today, there is a display of weapons and copperplate engravings, plaus a world-renowned collection of art.
The Hofgarten (Court Garden), which is home to the Museum of Natural History, is one of the most beautiful parts of the town and owes a lot to Coburg's ducal heritage. The garden stretches from the castle to the Ehrenburg Palace, which has an impressive Riesensaal (Giants' Hall) - a baroque chamber decorated with stucco ornamental plasterwork.
Christmas tree decorations, wooden toys, ceramics and porcelain of all kinds dominate the scene of the Coburg Christmas Market. The fragrant aroma of roasted almonds, "Lebkuchen" (the delicious German-style gingerbread) and the famous Coburger Bratwurst pervade the air. A carrousel in the centre of the market square delights children and music adds to the wonderful atmosphere of the Christmas Market. You can also find daily performances of traditional regional handicrafts, glassblowing of Christmas decorations, wood carving and more. The State Theatre performs the childrens' play "Pippi Longstockings". In addition, Santa Claus arrives on special days at the Market with gifts for the children. The Christ child will make appearances from time to time to talk with the kids.
The booths and stalls in the heart of the historic Old Town are open from November 26th - December 23rd from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. all days, the food- and gluhwein stalls even till 9.30 pm.
