Schwerin Castle
Schwerin's fairytale castle is the regional capital's most famous
landmark and the seat of the regional parliament. Surmounted with
glittering golden spires it stands on an island in Lake Schwerin.
In the castle museum, visitors can tour the state rooms in all
their historic grandeur then relax in the Castle Café or the
orangery with its mediterranean ambience.
Market square
The old town hall, gabled houses and the lion statue lend the
market square its distinctive character. The cathedral rises up
behind the graceful 18th century 'new building' with its
classical-style columns. There are fabulous panoramic views of the
town and the surrounding area from the spire of the cathedral. Just
a stone's throw away are the Butchers Market and the old cathedral
square.
Cathedral
The cathedral is a prime example of brick Gothic architecture, and
is the town's only medieval architectural monument. The 14th
century wall paintings in the Chapel of the Assumption are
particularly eye-catching whilst the Gothic altar with a depiction
of the crucifixion is another of the gems in its interior. Every
year numerous organ recitals are given by organists from all over
the world.
